Kelp: Beautiful or Useful

Inspired by the repeating patterns of the Arts and Crafts movement. Drawing parallels between it’s rejection of industrialised manufacturing, and its damaging effects on social conditions, with the current rise of AI and it’s destruction quality of life, the planet and art.

Combining kelp “leather” biomaterials and Irish lace crochet to pay homage to seaweed and crochet being lifelines during the Great Famine. Whilst exploring contradiction of how they have recently become luxuries and can also be used to help fight climate change. Whether it’s the potential to create innovative materials, or people using crochet to make their own clothes.
